Research Infrastructures

ALLEA engages with the Europe-wide and global debates on research infrastructures as one of the elements by which better conditions for collaborative research are created. ALLEA supports a pan-European approach that considers, alongside new and to-be-strengthened European research infrastructures (as identified by the ESFRI roadmap), the necessity of increased funding for and promotion of more open access policies and consistently high operational standards for medium- and small-scale RI’s, as well as for distributed and networked RI’s, and for “regional partner facilities”. ALLEA encourages and supports its members who run such RI’s to make all possible efforts to be included in the respective national RI strategies. ALLEA advocates an outward communication strategy that demonstrates the uniqueness of the European RI landscape at all three levels.

ALLEA is convinced that a consistent, long-term strategy at national and European level will contribute to rendering Europe a more attractive research base for some of the brightest and creative minds. For this reason, ALLEA is member of the group of science organisations convened by the European Commission and subscribing to a joint European strategy for RI’s and is participating observer in the ESF MO Forum on Medium-Sized Research Infrastructures.

ALLEA believes that in particular for the fragmented European research in the Social Sciences and Humanities special efforts must be made in bringing together funding streams and strategic approaches of DG Research & Innovation, INFSO, Education and Culture and possibly others to develop a coherent and sustainable policy and funding structure.
