| Science and Ethics |
The Standing Committee on Science & Ethics (SCSE) is concerned with a wide range of problems, 'internal' (within the scientific community) and 'external' (relations between science and society). Because ethical considerations have been an essential component in the European construction, and in the creation of ALLEA, the SCSE has been extending its capacities and activities during recent years, in order to fulfil adequately its mission of collective deliberation. In an effort to achieve better representativity of European geography, of natural and social sciences, gender, and age, it now has around fifteen members
The SCSE meets about twice a year, either in close meetings or in wider settings [notably through partnerships with relevant organizations such as Euroscience, European Science Foundation (ESF), Pugwash, UNESCO, International Council for Science (ICSU) and the European Commission (EC)] It maintains direct relations with the ALLEA leadership, reports at the General Assemblies and contributes to the Yearbooks, - and also produces occasional outreach publications (brochures, books). Some of the issues recently addressed include: scientific integrity and misconduct, research on embryos, quantitative evaluation of research, ethical aspects of risk, education in ethics, and fair-play within the European space.
