Research Cooperation
The ALLEA WG on Research Co-operation, which is based on fostering the Lisbon ideas, is the next stage of the former WG on National Strategies of Research in Smaller European Countries. The aim is to bring the problems regarding scientific co-operation and networking in Europe to ALLEA’s attention. This is the academies’ scientific task since their strive for excellence in research takes them to the cutting edge of knowledge. The advancement of east-west, north-south, large-small, i.e. links in Europe between the research communities and the proper use of EC and national instruments, should also be analysed by the academies.

The bottlenecks to the development of ERA seem to be the academia-government-society links, transfer of knowledge, and science education. Both ALLEA and other actors’ viewpoints should be collected and analysed. The WG’s explicit opinion is that the problems of co-operation should be considered in the entire European context and that division into various blocks is a return to the past.

The WG is comprised of representatives from 11 academies who will prepare a draft report in 2004.
