The Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS) is the biggest national center for scientific research. The BAS includes 42 autonomous research units (institutes) performing research in 9 divisions in all scientific areas. It is accredited to tutor doctoral students in the areas of research conducted by the BAS institutes.
The BAS strategic goal is to contribute for building of the knowledge-based Bulgarian society and to continue playing an active role as a partner within the European Research Area (ERA). The BAS generates 60% of Bulgaria’s internationally recognized scientific output, such as publications in international scientific journals, projects, patents. As per the report of the Review Committee submitted as result of the independent international evaluation of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences in 2009: “The majority of BAS institutes perform valuable research as judged by international standards. In some cases the panel found research groups that operate at the forefront worldwide.”
