ALLEA Working Groups are advisory bodies of temporary duration concerned with specific issues and providing advice and guidance on matters to do with science, science management and science policy. Their services may vary from advising the Steering Committee to producing memoranda, reports or best practice tools published under the auspices of ALLEA.

The Steering Committee decides about the establishment of a Working Group. The chair of a Working Group is typically affiliated to one of ALLEA’s Member Academies, nominated and approved by the Steering Committee. The members of a Working Group are preferably also affiliated to a Member Academy, and are jointly appointed by the chair and the President.

ALLEA Permanent Working Groups are concerned with prolonged issues of policy and advice pertaining to the natural or social sciences. Their services may vary from advising the General Assembly to taking a stance or issuing a declaration, to producing a memorandum or brochure with the General Assembly’s endorsement, or even a monograph or collected papers published by the Permanent Working Group under the auspices of ALLEA.

Permanent Working Groups are instituted by the General Assembly when so proposed by the Steering Committee. The chair and members of a Permanent Working Group are affiliated Academicians to a Member Academy, nominated and approved by the Steering Committee.
